Report of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee

March 4, 2005

President Wilson convened the sixth SPSC meeting of the Spring 2005 semester at 2:30 p.m. The group immediately turned to the revised potential goalgoals statements that teams of Committee members had prepared after the previous meeting. Before discussing the drafts, the group reviewed what it was striving for in every case: (1) a straightforward statement of each goal; (2) a succinct but clear indication of what achieving the goal would mean; (3) and a rationale for why the goal is a priority at this time. In addition, the President expressed a desire for a 2- or 3-word phrase that could serve as “shorthand” for each goal as he talks about the strategic plan with off-campus audiences.

Professor Chapman volunteered to revise all statements in a consistent style and format. The Committee then spent the entire rest of the meeting suggesting language to help in thathis task.

The Committee adjourned just before 4 p.m. to hear Professor April DeConick's Faculty Colloquium, agreeing to continue its work at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8.
