Summer 2013 Housing Information and Application

The Basics

Summer housing will be provided in Dodds Hall for approximately 150 students. Students admitted into summer housing will live in double rooms with a bathroom shared with other students on the floor. To be eligible for summer housing, students must be in financial good standing with the Business Office, registered for Fall 2013 classes (this means that recent graduates are not eligible) and fit one of four criteria:

  • A student may be employed full-time by the University during the period of residence
  • A student may be conducting research for a faculty member
  • A student may have an international home address
  • A student may be participating in the Summer Enrichment Program (SEP)

Students who fall out of compliance with any one of the required criteria will be asked to vacate summer housing within 48 hours.

Summer residence halls will be staffed with Resident Assistants, and Office of Residential Life policies and procedures remain in effect throughout the summer term. Summer housing is a privilege, and violations of policy will almost certainly result in termination of a student's housing for the rest of the summer.

Application Dates and Deadlines

Applications submitted by Sunday, April 20, 2013 will receive priority consideration on a first-come, first-served basis.  Students who apply after April 20, 2013 will be accepted and housed based on the availability of spaces. If you do not meet one of the criteria indicated above for summer housing your application will be considered after the applications of those that do.

Students accepted into summer housing who will be living in the residence halls during May Term may remain in their current residence hall spaces until May 31, 2013 when they will begin moving into their assigned summer spaces. For your information, between May 24 and June 8, there will be no hot water on campus due to annual boiler and steam tunnel maintenance.

About Dodds

Dodds Hall - Dodds Hall opened in 1970. The hall was dedicated to an outstanding alumnus, Glenn W. Dodds, for his distinguished service to secondary education. A former IWU staff member, Mr. Dodds' family owned the original property on which Dodds Hall was built. This four-story hall has a capacity of 153 and offers a suite-living concept in a fully carpeted, air-conditioned setting. Each suite contains a living room and four student rooms accommodating eight residents who share common bath facilities with an adjoining suite. Both double-occupancy rooms and a limited number of singles are available. Formal and recreational lounges complete this unique residence hall. New, stackable, versatile furniture was added to Dodds in 1998 and the building was completely renovated during the summer of 2000, including the installation of network and cable to each room.

Summer Rent, Rebates and Deadlines

The cost of summer housing is $690, but students who move within the approved "rebate windows" can earn two $50 rebates ($100 total reduction) for a total summer housing cost of $590. As a comparison, students living in the residence halls during the academic year pay approximately $350/month in rent.

Students who request and are assigned a single room will be charged an additional $50/month in rent.

In years when demand for summer housing is low, super-single rooms will be made available.  Students assigned to a super-single will be charged an additional $100/month in rent.

UNIVERSITY SUBSIDIES

There are a few instances whereby the University will subsidize a portion of students' summer housing charges.  These primarily include students participating in faculty-sponsored on-campus research or the OMSA Summer Enrichment Program.  These subsidies will cover the basic, double room charges for each month, or $590.

Students being subsidized for summer housing are responsible for the $100 deposit.  The $100 deposit can be credited back to students accounts through two $50 rebates, available during the check-in and check-out processes.  All students are responsible for single ($50/mo) or super-single ($100/mo) up-charges.

DEPOSIT

The accounts of all students accepted into summer housing will be assessed a non-refundable $100 deposit on May 15, 2013. Students accepted but who withdraw from summer housing in writing (email: dmeyer@iwu.edu) before May 15 will not be charged the non-refundable deposit.

A $50 moving rebate will be available to students who move to and from their summer space within the rebate window and guidelines. Students with moving date conflicts will not qualify for the rebate:
