Housing Lottery

All current students who will live in the Residence Halls in the fall will need to complete a Housing Registration Survey (sent through email). Once registered, you will be entered into the Housing Lottery.  For more information on the Housing Lottery, go to the Current Student Registration page or the Housing Lottery FAQ page.

While all students are welcome to participate in the Housing Lottery Nights in late March, there are a number of available options for early selection of rooms. These include: suite housing, single and super single room selections, returning to your current room (squatter's rights), and theme communities. We provide early applications for each of these options due to their limited availability.

Students who have been placed early will find out before Spring Break. This time frame will provide students who are unable to gain early placement time to make plans for the Housing Lottery Nights. There is also the opportunity to complete a roommate matching form and participate in a new roommate search program.  Information and links to each application / form is available on this page.

Housing Lottery Nights

The Housing Lottery Nights will begin on Monday, March 26, 2012, from 3:00 - 8:00pm. It will continue each day that week until all registered students have a chance to participate.  Fall housing openings will be available during Spring Break, once all early applications have been processed.

By utilizing the sidebar on the page, you will be able to:

  • Review up-to-date fall housing availability
  • View each available building with a detailed room listing and floor layout
  • Filter results by: gender, hall, capacity, occupancy, and suite type.

WAIT LIST

There are often times when students are not able to sign up for the specific building they originally hoped for or choose to bypass the lottery until a final decision is made regarding where they will be in the fall.  In all instances, students who would like to hold out for a specific space can sign up using this application.

  • Students can sign up for as many options as they desire.

  • Students who complete the application before the completion of the Housing Lottery Nights will have their applications sorted using their Lottery Number.

  • Students who complete the application at the conclusion of the Housing Lottery Nights will be placed at the end of listing.

Roommate Matching

Students who arrive at the Housing Lottery without a roommate are randomly paired with the previous or next same gender student to select the same building.   Although ORL staff does not match roommates for the Housing Lottery, all students are provided the opportunity to complete the roommate matching form.

The roommate matching form has been divided into four sections: Routines and Interests; Room Atmosphere; Smoking and Alcohol in the Residence Halls; and Health Considerations and Special Accommodations. Feel free to complete as many or few of the questions as desired.

The matching form is also embedded into the Housing Registration and Notification Survey.  Students should not complete this form in both placed.  PLEASE NOTE: This form link will send you to an external web page.

ROOMMATE SELECTED

For current students, completing the matching form is optional. It is a good idea to discuss many of the matching questions with your intended roommate to be sure you are on the same page in regard to important preferences. If, at any time in the school year, you are left underassigned in your room, you will be required to complete a roommate matching form so ORL staff will be able to make a new placement, if necessary.

ROOMMATE MATCHING SEARCH PROGRAM

In an effort to limit the number of students who attend the lottery without a roommate, ORL hosts a "Find a Roommate Night." While this activity has provided success to many roommate pairs, it does not always offer the most comfortable experience for all participants.

In order to further help facilitate potential roommate matches before the lottery, ORL will be trying out a "Roommate Search." Students who wish to participate will need to complete the roommate matching form. Then, similar to the First-Year matching process, ORL staff will sort through and compile lists of students who could be potential roommates.

Participants would be provided with the list of students they were included on, with contact information for each student (as entered on the first page of this survey). In order to be effective, lists will need to have between 4-8 residents.

This is a trial activity, so there is no way to anticipate the number of participants. We hope this process can further support students who are in need of a roommate.

Early Applications

In an effort to reduce the stress involved when selecting rooms during the Housing Lottery Nights, the Office of Residential Life continues the tradition of providing students with opportunities to apply for certain room types in advance.

The applications below are also embedded into the Housing Registration and Notification Survey.  Students should not apply in both placed.  Details and links to each application are below.  PLEASE NOTE: The application links will send you to an external web page.

SINGLE AND SUPER-SINGLE ROOM INFORMATION

This application provides you with an opportunity to request a single room in advance of the Housing Lottery. If you are selected for a single or super-single room, you will be notified before Spring Break.

This application does not act as a wait list. Once all rooms have been allocated, students will need to complete a wait list form to be contacted in singles become available. Single rooms have an upcharge of $441/semester while super singles have an upcharge of $1008 (2011-12 rates).

SQUATTER'S RIGHTS INFORMATION

The best way to build community is to retain students who love their buildings year after year. It is this philosophy that drives our squatters room rights. Students currently living in Pfeiffer and Magill have the ability to return to their community year after year.

Squatters will be placed in the following order: same room, same roommate; same room, different roommate; different room, same roommate; different room, different roommate. Pfeiffer single rooms are not eligible and must be requested through the single room application.

In moments when both roommates would like to retain a room with a different roommate, the student with the higher lottery time will receive the space. Applications are only accepted if the room is filled to capacity. All squatters must complete an application.

SUITE STYLE HOUSING INFORMATION

Students who wish to live with smaller, more intimate groupings of neighbors have the options of Dodds Hall and Harriett House. These buildings have double rooms with 4-, 6-, or 8-residents sharing a common area.

In order to accommodate students who wish to live in one of these communities, but are unable to fill a suite  to capacity, we offer full suites in advance of the housing selection. Any available spaces in suites during the housing selection are then offered as standard double rooms.

THEME HOUSING INFORMATION

Theme living is designed to increase the range of housing options available to all students. It allows students to experience the benefits and rewards of living in a smaller community, while ensuring equitable access to residential resources. Theme living is an option for interested groups whose mission is consistent with the goals and purposes of Illinois Wesleyan University and whose ability to enhance that mission will be increased by the opportunity to live together.  For more details, as well as current community options, go to the Theme Housing page.
