We're thrilled that you're exploring the ORL Staff Selection web site. This is the first step on the road to becoming an active member of the Residential Life Staff for Fall 2012. What lies before you is literally an opportunity that will change your life.

You will find links to the Office of Residential Life website, position descriptions for the RA and FYRA positions, important 2012-2013 dates, a selection process timeline and the web application. We encourage you to read over these documents very carefully and make sure you understand them before you proceed with your online application.

First-Year Resident Advisors (FYRAs) are student-staff members living in first-year residence halls. These students live on each floor and are available to assist residents with problems and concerns. FYRAs are a primary source of continuing orientation of first-year students to the University community. FYRAs are specially trained to understand and address transition issues common to first-year students. They work to create and maintain a sense of community on the floor and in the hall through initiating and encouraging campus and hall programs, answering questions and directing students to different campus services, counseling residents, confronting inappropriate behavior and interpreting the University policies to the residents.

FYRAs are busy people . This list shows the commitments they keep on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

There are 20 First-Year Resident Advisors on staff.

Resident Assistants  (RAs) are student-staff members living in upperclass residence halls. These students live on each floor and are available to assist residents with problems and concerns. RAs work to create and maintain a sense of community on the floor and in the hall through initiating and encouraging campus and hall programs, counseling residents, confronting inappropriate behavior and interpreting the University policies to the residents

RAs are busy people . This list shows the commitments they keep on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

There are 23 Resident Assistants on staff.

Staff Assistants  (SAs) are student staff members hired to serve as helpers and resources for students. Ongoing training, professional development and campus-wide programming are essential elements of the position. The SA stands ready to step into an RA or FYRA position as called upon.

SAs are busy people . This list shows the commitments they keep on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

There are a variable number of Staff Assistants on staff with a typical pool of 15 to 20 .

In order to help staff members balance the time commitments of the position with their roles as people and students, the ORL provides a list of commitments during the 2012-2013 academic year (brief / extended) that staff members will be required to attend. Such events include staff trainings, staff developments and university events. Take a look to make sure that you don't have conflicts (particularly with fall training) that will prevent you from fulfilling the requirements of the position!

The selection process timeline will help you keep track of important deadlines. You might want to bookmark it!

It is important that you make an appointment with the Office of Financial Aid to determine how an ORL staff position will alter your financial aid package. Call 556-3096 to make an appointment.


If you are a new candidate for the RA/FYRA Position
On average, the online application takes about thirty minutes to complete. Enjoy!

  • Online recommendation from current RA/FYRA
  • Online recommendation from a faculty or staff member of your choosing (this may be a professor, advisor, former high-school coach/teacher, youth group leader, etc.)
  • 1 half-hour individual interview (more information via email after you apply)
  • Participation in group process (more information via email after you apply)
