Education

Carolyn M. Jarvis received a B.S.N. cum laude from the University of Iowa in 1968, a M.S.N. from Loyola University Chicago in 1974, and a Ph.D. in 2005 from the University of Illinois at Chicago, with a research interest in the physiologic effect of alcohol on the cardiovascular system.

Biography

Dr. Jarvis is the author of North America’s most widely used health assessment textbook entitled Physical Examination and Health Assessment; the book is in its sixth edition and has been translated into five languages. She was a recipient of the University of Missouri’s campus-wide Superior Teaching Award, where she previously taught health assessment and critical care nursing. In faculty roles at the University of Missouri, University of Illinois, and Illinois Wesleyan University, Dr. Jarvis has taught health assessment and pathophysiology/pharmacology to baccalaureate students, graduate students, and nursing professionals, and has held over 150 continuing education seminars. Dr. Jarvis has maintained a clinical practice, first as a cardiovascular clinical specialist in various critical care settings and then as a certified family nurse practitioner in primary care. During the last five years, her interest has focused on learning Spanish to provide health care in the local community and in rural Guatemala.

Honors and Memberships

Dr. Jarvis is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International recently serving as recording secretary of the Theta Pi Chapter, and is active in the Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nursing.
