BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— Three Illinois Wesleyan University students are among the recently announced recipients of the Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship for studying abroad during the spring semester.
Junior Christine Gawron, Hispanic studies major from Chicago, received $4,000 to study with SIT in Bolivia on their Multiculturalism, Globalization, and Social Change program. Sophomore nursing majors Gisel Lopez, from Northlake, Ill., and Callie Phipps, from Steger, Ill., each received $4,500 to study in Spain as part of the IWU Spain program.
The Gilman award is awarded thorough a competitive application process to Pell Grant recipients wishing to study abroad. The award is meant to enable students with limited means to have an international experience.
The program is funded by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 and is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
