BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – On Friday, Feb. 3, the Illinois Wesleyan Symphonic Winds and the University Choir will present a joint concert. The performance, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Westbrook Auditorium of Presser Hall (1210 Park St., Bloomington).
Directed by Assistant Professor of Music Brian Russell, the University Choir will begin the concert with Shirim L’Yom Tov (Four Festive Songs) by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Shulamit Ran. The Symphonic Winds will perform three pieces under the direction of Assistant Professor of Music Roger Garrett – Fortress by Frank Ticheli, Reflections by Roger Nixon and Chester Overture by William Schuman. The ensembles will combine to close the program with a performance of Psalm 39, Op. 7 by Julius Spengel.
Only one copy of Spengel’s score still exists worldwide and was reconstructed by Russell for Friday night’s performance, making it the first of the work in its original instrumentation in a number of decades.
