BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan University will host the Illinois Chamber Music Festival and Camp July 8-28 as part of the IWU Summer Music Program.
The summer concert series will offer 12 performances by faculty, guest artists, and students. All concerts and master classes are free and open to the public. Registration is still open and need-based scholarships are available.
The festival involves instructing high school and college musicians, particularly string and piano players, in playing chamber music and working with chamber ensembles. Faculty from IWU and from other universities will coach the student groups with instruction in violin, viola, cello, piano, wind instruments and guitar. Teachers will include Mihai Craioveanu (Hope College), Michelle Lee Elliott (New Music School in Chicago), Coordinator of the IWU String Preparatory Department Lisa Nelson and Michael Strauss (Indianapolis Symphony) for violin and viola, Associate Professor of Music Nina Gordon and Serafim Smigelskiy (Julliard Orchestra) for cello, Mark Clinton (University of Nebraska), Professor of Music R. Kent Cook, Irina Kats (Levine School of Music) and Hannah Keydar (Or-Yehuda School of performing Arts) for piano, David Gresham (Illinois State University) for clarinet, Roger Roe (Indianapolis Symphony) for oboe, Professor of Music William West for flute and Assistant Professor of Music Joe Plazak for guitar.
During the three weeks of intensive chamber music training, daily activities will range from master classes and daily coaching to rehearsals and performances by students, faculty and guests. Camp participants will also experience activities such as singing, international dance, swimming and tennis while residing on the IWU campus.
Throughout the camp, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their talents. Student concerts will be held on Saturday, July 14 at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 18 at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 27 at 7:30 p.m. and the final concert will be held on Saturday July 28 at 3:00 p.m.
