Ash Wednesday Chapel Hour Service

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan University will hold its next chapel hour on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 11 a.m. in the Evelyn Chapel (1301 N. Park St., Bloomington).

The service is open to the public.

In observance of Ash Wednesday, University Chaplain Rev. Hope Luckie will focus her sermon on the beginning of Lent. The service will include the imposition of ashes.

In the Christian tradition, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent. Many Christian denominations hold services that focus on the Lenten season’s themes of penitence and self-denial that include marking the forehead with ashes, which signifies a recommitment to a journey of faith.

Christians believe that Lent, a forty-day period of reflection that prepares them for the holiday of Easter. The season also focuses on strengthening one’s faith.
