BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan University alumnus and local artist Spencer Sauter has a show of his artwork on display at the Timothy Kent Gallery (236 E. Front St., Bloomington, Ill.) through Sept. 30.
The show, New Artwork by Spencer Sauter, features works that Sauter describes as digital paintings.
“While each work begins with photographs—one figurative, the other landscape—the process of invention using Photoshop involves more painterly concerns than mere photo manipulation might connote,” Sauter explains on his Web site. “And, when the images are ‘complete,’ the artwork is only in its initial stage, rather than finished. Constructing frames, boxes, or stretchers, layering boarders with repetitive imagery, laying out grids of seed beads all ‘flesh out’ the final work.”
Sauter graduated from Illinois Wesleyan in 1970 with a bachelor’s in English and in 1973 with a bachelor’s of fine arts in art. He earned his master’s in art from Illinois State University in 1975. He previously worked at the Pantagraph as an art, music, theatre and food critic, and currently works as an artist and graphic designer out of his home in Normal.
