Illinois Wesleyan Golf Teams in National Rankings

October 16
The Illinois Wesleyan men's golf team is ranked No. 5 in the latest NCAA Division III poll by the National Golf Coaches Association and Golf World magazine. The Titans were No. 10 in the previous poll. For more information, go to GolfWorld Magazine or click on the link above to access their site.

October 13
The Illinois Wesleyan men's golf team finished in fourth place at the Gordin Collegiate Classic, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan on October 12-13 at Cannon Ridge Golf Club in Fredericksburg, Va. The tournament annually matches many of the top finishers from the previous spring's NCAA Division III championship tournament. IWU finished with a two-day total of 585 after a second round 300. Huntingdon won the event, shooting a second-round 287 to finish at 569 and defeat Methodist by two shots. Skidmore placed third with a 582. Bennett Blakeman fired a team-low 73 on the second day and finished in 10th place with a 145 total. Mike DeRuntz finished tied for 13th with a 147 score while Matt Wennmaker and Chris Green tied for 18th individually with totals of 148.

October 12
The Illinois Wesleyan men's golf team is in third place after the first day of the Gordin Collegiate Classic, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan at Cannon Ridge Golf Club in Fredericksburg, Va. The tournament annually matches many of the top finishers from the previous spring's NCAA Division III championship tournament. IWU had a first day score of 285, trailing Methodist (277) and Huntingdon (282). Mike DeRuntz and Matt Wennmaker are tied for sixth with scores of 1-under par 70 while Bennett Blakeman is tied for 12th with his 72. Methodist's Josh Schrader is the tourney leader with 64. The tournament's second and final round is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 13.

September 29
The Illinois Wesleyan men’s golf team finished first in the 23-team Twin Cities Classic, played Sept. 27-29 in Minnesota and hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. The Titans shot a three-day team score of 870 after a final day round of 291 at the White Bear Lake (Minn.) Yacht Club course and IWU held off Division III No. 1-ranked St. John's (Minn.), who finished second with a team score of 874. Wesleyan's Mike DeRuntz and Bennett Blakeman finished tied for third with totals of even par 216 and Matt Wennmaker finished with a 218 total (2-over par). Andy Petersen of Central (Iowa) was the tournament medalist with a 2-under total of 214.

September 28
The Illinois Wesleyan men’s golf team surged into first place after the second round of the Twin Cities Classic, played at The Links at Northfork in Ramsey, Minn. The Titans fired a second round 289 and are at 579 after two rounds, ahead of second place St. John’s (Minn.) with a 581 total. Mike DeRuntz carded a 70 and is the individual leader with a 141 score, ahead of Joe Schoolmeesters of St. John’s and Central’s Andy Petersen at 142. Wesleyan’s Bennett Blakeman is tied for sixth place with a 144 total and teammate Matt Wennmaker is at 146, good for an eighth place tie. The final round of the 54-hole tournament will be played Monday, Sept. 29 at the White Bear Lake Yacht Club.

September 27
Led by a 1-under par 71 by Mike DeRuntz, the Illinois Wesleyan men’s golf team is tied for second place after the first day in the Twin Cities Classic, held at Elk River Country Club in St. Peter, Minn. The Titans have a first round total of 290, tied with Central (Iowa) in the 22-team event behind only St. John’s (Minn.) at 284. DeRuntz is tied for seventh in the event and Matt Wennmaker is tied for ninth with an even-par 72 on the 6,560 yard course. St. John’s Joe Schoolmeesters is the individual leader with a 67. Play continues Sept. 28 and Sept. 29.

September 13-14
Senior Bennett Blakeman fired a 2-under-par 70 to lead the Illinois Wesleyan "green" team to a third place showing at the Mount Mercy Cropper Golf Classic at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion, Iowa on Sunday, September 14. Blakeman posted a two-day total of 1-under-par 141 for fifth place in medal play while the "green" team carded a two-day total of 585, five shots behind winner St. Ambrose. IWU's Mike DeRuntz and Chris Green each carded two-day totals of 147 to tie for 11th place. The IWU "white" team finished in eighth place with a 605 total and was led by Travis Otto, who also tied for 11th in the tournament with a 147 score. Lindenwood's Kyle Gray was the tournament medalist with a score of 139 (67-72).

July 21

The Illinois Wesleyan men's golf team, winners of the 2008 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament and tied for 12th in the national NCAA Division III men's golf championships, will open their 2008-09 season Sept. 13-14 at the Mount Mercy Fall Invitational, held at Hunters Ridge G.C. in Marion, Iowa. Among IWU's returning players is senior Chris Green, a first team All-American as a result of his second place finish in the Division III championships. At the par 71, 7030-yard Chateau Course at the Chateau Elan Resort, Green carded a final day 2-over par 73 to finish at 290, five shots behind medalist Scott Harris Jr. of St. John Fisher College, who finished with 285. As a team IWU finished with a 1235 total. St. John's (Minn.) won the championship with an 1192 total, topping second place Redlands (Calif.) at 1195.
