Kulavic Earns CCIW Baseball Top Pitching Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - - Illinois Wesleyan University sophomore Brent Kulavic has been named “Pitcher of the Year” in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in voting by CCIW coaches today.

The league has named a pitcher-only award for three seasons and IWU pitchers have won it twice as Matt Aronson earned the honor in 2007.

Kulavic and Aronson were named to the all-CCIW first team along with seniors Ricky Angel and Tim McInerney, junior designated hitter Kevin Goshorn and sophomore outfielder Kraig Ladd.

Kulavic (Springfield, Pleasant Plains HS) led the league with a 2.03 earned run average and had a 5-0 record. He was fifth in the CCIW with 33 strikeouts in 40 innings.

Aronson (LaGrange, St. Ignatius HS), a first team all-CCIW repeater, was 4-0 with a 4.91 earned run average in conference games and led the league with 44 strikeouts in a league-most 44 innings pitched.

Second baseman Angel (Glen Ellyn, Glenbard West HS), a first team all-CCIW selection in 2007 and 2005 and second team in 2006, batted .403 with 10 doubles, five home runs and tied for the league lead with 35 runs batted in.

IWU outfielder McInerney (River Forest, Oak Park-River Forest HS)batted .378 with eight doubles, three home runs and 19 runs batted in.

Goshorn (New Lenox, Lincoln Way Central HS) batted .321 with four doubles and had five home runs, tied for second in the league.

Ladd (Shelbyville HS) was 13th in the league with a .393 average and finished with 24 RBI and tied for second in the CCIW with 10 doubles.

Junior third baseman Tim Marzec and junior pitcher Jesse Foster and sophomore first baseman Casey McIntosh were second team all-conference choices.

Marzec (Evergreen Park, St. Rita HS) was 11th in the CCIW with a .400 average and had three doubles.

Foster (Homewood, Homewood-Flossmoor HS), a first team all-CCIW choice in 2007, was 5-1 with a 5.32 ERA in CCIW games.

McIntosh (Columbia, Mo., Hickman HS) batted .385 with eight doubles, a triple and four homers against the league. He had a .723 slugging percentage and had a 1.000 fielding percentage, handling 156 chances.

Wheaton sophomore shortstop Brian Kolb, who hit .573 with a league record 51 hits in conference play, was named the “Player of the Year” and Wheaton’s Bobby Elder was “Coach of the Year.”

The Titans were 18-3 in winning the conference regular season title for the second straight season. The IWU pitching staff had a 4.03 ERA, second to Carthage’s 3.89, and the team batting average was .356, behind Wheaton (.390) and Augustana (.359).

IWU has had six players earn the league’s top honor, including Angel (2007), pitcher Cory Lapinski (2005), pitcher Steve Schilsky (2001), pitcher Nathan Knuffman (1998), catcher Mike Brown (1991) and outfielder James Shaw (1980).
