Hispanic Studies Major

Overview

In today's global society, knowledge of a second language is a necessary bridge to understanding human diversity. Spanish is one of the 10 most widely used languages in the world and is spoken by nearly 35 million people in the United States.

At Illinois Wesleyan, we seek to expose students to the language and cultures of Spain and the Americas, with classes at all levels conducted in Spanish.

Students will develop:

  • develop effective written and oral communication
  • develop critical thinking skills through the analysis and comparison of the Spanish
  • grammatical system, literary styles and cultures
  • spend at least one semester abroad in a Spanish-speaking country.
  • have the opportunity to engage with the Latino/Hispanic community

Our students are encouraged to engage in cultural and social activities in communities beyond our campus, and serve as strong role models by continually expanding their own instruction, research and scholarship.
