Assistant Professor of Music Theory

Teach courses in the School of Music's two-year theory sequence, which integrates aural and written skills, as well as courses on advanced analysis and counterpoint. When scheduling permits, additional courses may be taught consistent with the applicant's interests and the needs of the School of Music. Maintain an active program of appropriate research activities at national and/or international venues. Serve on committees and perform other services for the University. Provide leadership with respect to curriculum development. Teach an occasional course in the all-university general education program. Doctorate in theory, composition, or theory and composition completed by August 1, 2010. Evidence of scholarly activity in music theory and promise of distinction in the field. Evidence of success as classroom teacher. Keyboard competence. A commitment to working and teaching with colleagues in the School of Music and across the University in a liberal arts environment. Preference given to candidates familiar with computer-assisted instruction, Schenkerian analysis, and post-tonal theory, and who can incorporate such areas as popular music, jazz, and improvisation into the two-year theory sequence.
