What is Dropbox?

Dropbox is an online File Storage space software that allows you to store and access your files from any computer connected to the Internet.

Limitations

  • All accounts have a free 2GB quota. If you want more room you'd need to purchase it. Approximate cost: $9.99/month for 50GB or $19.99/month for 100GB.
  • Files will not be synchronized to all your devices unless you're connected to the internet.

Merits

  • You can download Dropbox onto your smart phone and on multiple computers that you frequently use.
  • Dropbox is simple and user-friendly.
  • You can access Dropbox online using any computer or smart phone that has the Dropbox software installed.

How do you install Dropbox?

Installing the Dropbox software is quick and easy.

Windows: Go to www.dropbox.com. Click "Download Dropbox". When the run window pops up, click on "Run".

Mac: Go to www.dropbox.com. Click "Download Dropbox". Click the .dmg file on the left hand side of your screen. Drag the Dropbox icon into your "Applications" folder. Double click the Dropbox icon. When the next window appears, click "Open".

What's next?

Create a Dropbox account. To do this, click on the "I don't have a Dropbox account" during the setup process. Fill out the necessary information, click "Next". You may also create an account by going to www.dropbox.com and click the "Create an account" link.

How do you upload documents onto Dropbox from your computer?

Open your Dropbox folder.

Drag a file or folder into your Dropbox folder. If you are connected to the internet, it will start uploading immediately. After the upload is complete, a green checkmark will appear.

If you are not currently connected to the internet, your files will automatically update themselves once an internet connection is established.

How do you upload files from a different computer?

Go to www.dropbox.com. Login. Click the "upload" icon.

A window will open. Click "choose files". Browse and select the file(s) you want to upload. Click "Start upload".

 

How do you download files onto your computer?

Click to select the document. Click "download file". The document will download and appear in your "Downloads" folder.

What can go wrong?

The amount of free memory is 2GB per account. Dropbox will only synchronize your documents if you are connected to the Internet. Dropbox automatically updates your documents as soon as there is a connection. To check the synchronization, check the Dropbox icon on your task bar. Green circle with a checkmark = your documents are synched; blue circle with arrows = your files are being synched; red "X" = no internet connection and documents are unable to sync.
