Mr. Schmeink is finishing his PhD work at the Humboldt University Berlin.He has recently inaugurated the German-language Association for Research in the Fantastic (GFF), for which he also serves as 1. Chair of the Board. His publications explore the field of popular culture and the fantastic and he is founding editor of the peer-reviewed academic journal Zeitschrift für Fantastikforschung

"Fiscal Centralization and Integration in Europe and the U.S.: Implications for the Financial Crisis"

In October Dr. van der Beek will be at the University of Applied Sciences, Carinthia, Austria; is a visiting scholar at the European Union Center at UIUC through October 2011. He completed his Ph.D. in Economics at the Gerhard-Mercater University, Duisburg, Germany. He has also studies history, sociology, political science and economics at the University of Cologne in Germany and the University of Florence, Italy. In addition to his specializations in EU and international institutions, Dr. van der Beek's research includes comparative health systems, comparative labor markets and international fiscal relations.

Alejandro Cruz Molina was the previous Rector for the Costa Rican Technology Institute, a businessman, and educator. He has also been involved in other organizations regarding the development and planning for Costa Rica's future, working closely with the government. His lecture will cover Costa Rica: science, technology, and foreign direct investment for the development of Costa Rica and how this can be a model for international development in developing countries.
