Applying for a J-1 Visa

Before applying for a J-1 visa, please note that visa application procedures vary greatly from country to country, and within countries procedures may vary depending on the US Embassy or Consulate with which you are dealing.  Be certain to check with the Embassy or Consulate at which you intend to apply for your visa for complete details.

The US State Department web site provides a list of US Embassies and Consulates, as well as information on average visa processing times.  Note, however, that this information may not be up to date.

Application Process

  1. Contact your local US Embassy or Consulate to determine the exact application procedures and timeline for obtaining your visa.  Please be aware that some US Embassies and Consulates process visa applications via mail; others use a drop-off/pick-up system, and some require a personal interview.
  2. The basic J-1 visa application form is a DS-156, available electronically from your local US Embassy web site.  If you are male and between the ages of 16 and 45, you will likely be required to complete form DS-157.  Applicants for a J-1 visa may also be required to complete for DS-158, which provides contact information and your work history.

  3. In addition to the application form, be prepared to provide the following:
  • proof of your ties with your home country
  • your valid passport
  • proof of sufficient funds for your stay in the United States
  • application documents (link to section below)
  • visa application fee
  • proof of payment of the $180 USD SEVIS fee (also known as an I-901 fee) (link to section below)
  • the DS-2019 form issued by Illinois Wesleyan University (make certain that you have signed and dated the bottom of this form)
  • photographs, as directed by the US Embassy/Consulate
