IWU students with Dr. Mauricio Parra in Spain (Spring 2006)
Department of Hispanic Studies Presentation (ppt)
Our vision: The Department of Hispanic Studies strives to fulfill several key tenets of a liberal arts education at Illinois Wesleyan University: the development of effective communication, critical thinking, imaginative inquiry, and community engagement in student’s preparation for life in a global society. Towards that end the department is committed to delivering high quality courses in a wide breadth of areas.
Our mission: The Department of Hispanic Studies seeks to expose students to the language and cultures of Spain and the Americas, with classes at all levels conducted in Spanish. Whether students are pursuing General Education credit, a major or a minor in Hispanic Studies, we aim to promote effective communication, cultural understanding, critical thinking and imaginative inquiry. To prepare for life in a global society, faculty encourage students to engage in cultural and social activities in communities beyond our campus. Additionally, we aim to assist students in acquiring knowledge and skills for self-reflection and life-long learning. Faculty in the department serve as strong role models by continually expanding our own instruction, research and scholarship.
