Senior Class Gift
Class of 2011 Gift: Tree of Knowledge
Post-9/11 restrictions on mailing soil samples make replicating Dr. Bertholf's project impossible. Still, the spirit of globalization represented by the 1959 Tree will live on in the 2011 version. The Class Gift Committee will request from students at foreign and domestic universities that they send along the front page of their student-run newspapers to IWU, which will then be planted in the soil at the base of the tree. This act will symbolize IWU's connection to students around the world and make the new Tree of Knowledge distinctly different from the original, while still paying tribute to President Bertholf's beloved project. The Tree of Knowledge is to be planted in the Bertholf Garden near the north entrance to the Memorial Center (bottom of SAGA steps). A plaque identifying the purpose and meaning of the Tree will be installed to serve notice of the tradition. Thank you, seniors, for keeping IWU's rich history alive! |
Gift Options
While $20.11 is the suggested gift amount, every gift will be warmly received. The goal is to have every senior make a gift of some description. In addition, this year each senior has the opportunity to leave his or her mark on IWU by sponsoring a brick that bears his or her name on the Welcome Center walkway. A limited number of bricks are available, and they are first come, first serve. While alumni must give $250 or more to be recognized with a brick, seniors give $100.
Acknowledgement and Recognition
Each senior donor, regardless of the amount of their gift, will have the opportunity to honor one faculty member, staff member, or coach who influenced their IWU experience. The Development Office will send a certificate in the donor's name to his or her honoree. Additionally, donors will have the chance to film a quick "thank you" to parents, professors, etc. for helping them throughout their academic career at Illinois Wesleyan. These thank you videos will be filmed at Cap & Gown Pick-Up in the Hansen Center on April 11-12 and will be on display prior to the Commencement ceremony in May.
