The Major and Minor in French & Francophone Studies

Whether choosing a major or a minor in French & Francophone Studies, our program is intended to provide a liberal arts/professional approach to undergraduate education and to help students select the academic and professional orientation that will best prepare them to fulfill individual career and personal goals.  For information regarding certification to teach French (K-12), please see the IWU Educational Studies page. 

Placement test results or AP credit does not exempt students from taking the required number of courses for the major or the minor in French.  Furthermore, of the nine courses required for a major and the five required for a minor, a minimum of five courses for the major and three for the minor must be taken in residence at IWU.

The Major Sequence in French & Francophone Studies
Nine Courses (please go to our courses page for a description of each course): 
1) French 203 or 204
2) French 301 or 302
3) French 303 or 304
4) French 305, 315, 316, 317, or 318
5-9)  5 courses from among:  French 305, 310, 312, 370, 405, 406, 407, or 408

One literature course must be taken as a Senior Seminar. Students taking literature as a senior seminar must satisfy more rigorous expectations in the quality and intellectual sophistication of their oral and written work. Specific criteria to meet these goals will be established by the instructor.  A minimum of one semester study abroad is also required.  Click here for more details!
