General Education
General education requirements for elementary and secondary education candidates are the same as those outlined for all students in the College of Liberal Arts, with one exception: most Elementary certification candidate majors must take Math 106, Mathematical Concepts for Elementary Teachers II, to meet the formal reasoning requirement. Note that Math 105 is prerequisite to Math 106.
It is also strongly recommended, to meet required ISBE content area standards, that elementary certification candidates take general education courses in the following areas:
Life science (not psychology)
Physical science
Social Science (history, political science, sociology)
Specific course recommendations may be found in the Teacher Education Handbook.
