Follow the guidelines below. Please be aware that all unacceptable essays will be returned for revision.

Write a 1-2 page (single spaced, 11 or 12 font) typed biographical essay describing:

  1. The experiences that have influenced your decision to become a teacher and how you came to select your subject area (secondary and K-12 programs).
  2. The strengths that you expect to bring to the classroom.
  3. The challenges you expect to face during student teaching

Essay Guidelines:

Your essay will be read by potential cooperating teachers and will serve as your first introduction; therefore, think of it as comparable to a job interview. Your responses should have a professional tone and provide the reader with a brief and honest self-assessment that speaks to your strengths and anticipated challenges.

Acceptable essays address all three questions; have minimal errors in spelling, grammar, syntax and punctuation; are well organized and written coherently; convey ideas clearly and succinctly; and are written for a teacher audience. You are encouraged to consult with Writing Center tutors prior to submitting your essay.

If you have questions please contact your Educational Studies advisor.
