Selecting a Major
Selecting a major is a time of exploration as you learn more about yourself and your interests! Here are some tips to help you get started:
- Examine and explore your interests. If you're not sure where to begin, the Career Center can help. Contact us about taking one of our Interest/Skill/Personality Assessments.
- Think about which areas of study are of clear interest to you. Don't select a major based solely on your skills and strengths. If you’re skilled in math and you love it, go ahead and pursue a math major! However, if you’re good at math, but love psychology, consider pursuing psychology as a major!
- Take classes in areas that appeal to you if you're unsure of what to study. Talk to faculty and upper class students in those majors about what they like about those classes.
- Consider your leisure activities and how those interests might be connected to a major. Trust your instincts and pay attention to what truly excites you.
- Don't focus on identifying career possibilities linked to a particular major. At the Career Center, we have information about every major and possible coordinating career paths!
