School of Art
Students in the Ames School of Art explore their creative potential through courses in ceramics, drawing, painting, graphic design, printmaking, photography, sculpture and glass. Our curriculum in art history immerses students in analyzing and interpreting the visual arts in relation to society, culture, and history. Students are encouraged to investigate across disciplines in the other arts fields and in the College of Liberal Arts. Non art major students are welcome to take courses in all areas of the studio and art history programs.
We seek highly motivated, inquisitive students with a strong desire to study and develop ideas in visual form. The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree provides concentrated studio experience in an area of art or design. The BFA also has a strong secondary concentration in art history. The Bachelor of Arts degree is available with a choice of two concentrations, one in fine art and one in graphic design.
All faculty members are active professionals outside of the studio classrooms. As a result they share rich and varied experiences unique to artists, designers, and art scholars. Each faculty member has a strong commitment to mentoring and working one-on-one with students. The School broadens the instructional dialog by inviting numerous visiting artists, designers, and art theorists to campus each year. Visitors deliver public lectures, gallery talks, and meet with individual students. Visiting artists or designers are regularly invited to supplement course offerings. Art students routinely pursue international study at locations across the globe and complete professional internships appropriate to their career goals.
