The City Internship is a unique partnership between local government and higher education. It achieves the city's mission of effective management and the universities' missions of engaged citizenship. The program leverages the best of both worlds to create a challenging and meaningful experience for students who are interested in government and
democracy. The City Internship provides an intense and multi-faceted view of local government. The program aims to challenge, inspire and empower students to engage in the community. It will also provide the training, tools and models to create effective leaders now and in the future. The City Internship is an opportunity to build bridges across
campuses, across the city and across the community. This is also an opportunity to inspire young people to consider public-sector careers.
Positions Available: Up to three City Internships are available
Location: City Hall at 109 E Olive St Bloomington, IL.
Transportation to/from the work site is the responsibility of the intern
Dates: Spring 2013
Schedule & Requirements:
City Interns will attend City Council meetings on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month
Class with a selected community leader will be held on the alternate Mondays
Interns will also complete an individual project with a City department and hours will be determined according to the department's need and schedule City Interns will make a presentation to the campus and community at the end of the semester
Compensation: This position is unpaid
Academic Credit:
The City Internship might be eligible for academic credit. Students should consult with their faculty advisor. Registering the internship for credit is the responsibility of the student.
Eligibility:
IWU students registered in spring 2013
GPA of 3.20
Knowledge of current events and policy issues at the national, state and local levels

Illinois Wesleyan University partners with the West Bloomington Revitalization Project to promote the quality of life in our shared community. The strategic areas of focus for the WBRP are economic development, housing, youth, education, safety/wellness, and greening. Students have played an integral leadership role in the development of these
initiatives. Projects will be developed in each of these focus areas based on community opportunities and student interests. The Education intern might focus on the Book Bike or tutoring programs for local children or teaching English to Westside residents whose primary language is not English. Students should be flexible, creative and dedicated to the
principles of action research and asset-based community development.
Positions Available: Up to six Community Development internships are available (one per focus area)
Location: some hours will be at the WBRP office at 800 W Washington, Bloomington, IL
Transportation to/from the work site is the responsibility of the intern
Dates: Spring 2013 or May term 2013
Schedule & Requirements:
Complete and implement an action research project related to a WBRP focus area
Weekly meetings with Dr. Simeone and Deborah Halperin on Thursdays over the lunch hour
Journals reflecting on the research process
A presentation to the campus about your project

The Tool Library is a free tool lending program designed to serve the Bloomington-Normal Community. Free tool lending
provides homeowners with the resources that they need to make repairs and modifications to their homes, allowing
them to maintain a feeling of independence and dignity. Having the proper tools is a necessity with any home repair
project. The expensive nature of owning a tool for a one-time repair is not cost effective for any homeowner, but free
tool loans are.
Positions Available: Two co-manager positions are available
Location: West Bloomington Revitalization Project office at 800 W Washington St, Bloomington IL
Transportation to/from the work site is the responsibility of the co-manager
Dates: Spring 2013
Schedule:
Each co-manager will work up to fifteen hours per week
Between the co-managers, coverage MUST be provided on Friday afternoons 4-7pm, Saturday mornings from 9am –
Noon, and Monday mornings from 8am – 10am
Other hours are flexible
Compensation: $9/hr
Duties:
Facilitate the daily operations of the Tool Library
Lend tools and maintain accurate record of inventory
Customer guidance on safe tool usage and proper tool applications
Provide educational workshops related to home maintenance
Manage and coordinate Tool Library volunteers and interns
Marketing and community outreach including tool collection drives
Eligibility: All IWU students registered in spring 2013
Students MUST be from Illinois to meet the requirements of the grant program

The IWU Peace Garden was established in the spring of 2012 by students, faculty and community members. The garden, located just north of campus, has 20 types of tomato plants as well as pumpkins, beets, and a variety of herbs. A hoop house was added over the summer. Establishing the garden is part of the university's commitment to sustainability as well as community development. The garden is a place for volunteer service, co-curricular learning and community building. The campus and community work together to support and maintain the garden.
Positions Available: Two manager positions are available
Location: IWU Peace Garden and various locations on campus and in the community
Transportation to/from is the responsibility of the co-manager
Dates: Spring 2013
Schedule:
Each manager will work up to ten hours per week – FLEXIBILITY is a MUST
Compensation: This is available as a work study position or as an internship
Duties:
Caretaking of the garden including planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, etc.
Maintain seedlings and monitor growth
Supervise garden interns and volunteers
Maintain records of the garden activities and budget
Oversee marketing (including special events and social media) and development functions (including grants)
Manage activities and projects related to the garden
Eligibility: All IWU students registered in spring 2013

The Action Research Center is dedicated to the relentless pursuit of innovative ideas that empower communities, foster meaningful engagement, and promote social justice. ARC was established ten years ago and has been steadily growing in size and scope. Working in ARC includes project management, administrative support, and "all other duties as assigned" which are vast and varied. Successful Assistant Coordinators are flexible, creative, resourceful, determined, organized and fun.
Positions Available: Up to three ARC Assistant Coordinators will be selected
Location: hours will vary between on campus and in the community. Transportation to/from the work site is the
responsibility of the intern.
Dates: Spring 2013 or May term 2013
Schedule & Requirements:
Weekly meetings with Deborah Halperin (time and date TBD)
Coverage of ARC office for a total of 20 hours per week (between all Assistant Coordinators)
Compensation: This is eligible to be a work study position. Students may also use the position as an unpaid internship. Securing faculty approval for internship credit is the responsibility of the student.
