Do I have to bring a computer?

No, Illinois Wesleyan University has a large number of modern, public access computers using the Windows, Macintosh, and Linux operating systems.

Where are the public access computers?

  • Buck Memorial Library
    • Open computer lab area and computer classrooms
    • Macintosh and Windows computers
    • Scanners, digital cameras, digital video equipment, color and laser printers
  • Ames Library
    • Wide selection of technology tools for performing research related activities.
  • E-mail stations
    • Located in the Ames Library, Buck Memorial LIbrary, CNS, and the Hansen Student Center
  • Departmental Labs
    • Many academic departments have their own computer lab facilities focused on their field of study

If I bring a computer, what are the suggested minimum specifications?

  • Windows Computer
    • Pentium IV or newer, 2GB RAM, Windows XP Professional w/SP2; Ethernet; virus protection, spyware protection
  • Macintosh Computer
    • G5, 2GB RAM, Ehternet

Does Illinois Wesleyan offer any programs to assist or recommend in the purchase of a computer for a student? Is there a discount arrangement in place with a computer manufacturer or vendor?

Yes, the University has arrangements with Apple Computer, CDWG and Tiger Direct.. These are good places to start, but prices are constantly changing, so be sure to shop other vendors and compare the prices to get the best deal. How should I prepare my computer for Illinois Wesleyan?

  • Install up-to-date virus and spyware protection software

What software is installed on Illinois Wesleyan owned computers?

The exact software may vary slightly by location. However, Microsoft Office can be found on virtually all Illinois Wesleyan owned computers. SPSS, Mathematica, iLife, Finale, InDesign,  and ChemOffice are some of the specialty applications available.   All public access computers will have an up-to-date web browser.

Does Illinois Wesleyan have any guidelines to help determine how technology can be used?

Yes, to promote the appropriate use of technology, Illinois Wesleyan has established technology and web policies. Information about policies is presented to First Year Students during orientation.
