Access the Voicemail System

  • Login to the System
    • On Campus: Press the Message button on your phone or dial 3499
    • Off Campus: Dial 309-556-3499 (with a touch-tone phone)
  • Your Mailbox (login ID)
    • The last four digits of your phone Illinois Wesleyan number
  • Your Password
    • Initially, it is 12 followed by the last four digits of your Illinois Wesleyan phone number (follow the instructions below to change it from this default)
      For example: 556-5555 would have an initial password of 125555
  • Logout Information
    • When finished using the voicemail system, enter 83 and then hang up the handset to properly log-off

Common Configuration Tools
  • Change Your Password
    1. Login to the voicemail system
    2. Enter 84 and follow the prompts
      Tip: Passwords need to be six digits long
  • Establish Your Personal Verification
    User's typically record their name (or department if the number is not specific for a person). The Personal Verification is played before your greeting when someone calls your extension and they are directed to your voicemail. It is also stamped on messages you leave for others within the Illinois Wesleyan phone system.
    Tip: Since your Personal Verification states your name, it may be best not to start your message with your name also.
    1. Login to the voicemail system
    2. Enter 829 and select from the options below
      • Press 2 to play your current Personal Verification
      • Press 5 to record a Personal Verification
      • Press # to stop recording
      • Press 76 to delete your Personal Verification
  • Establish Your Greetings
    Tip:
    It is wise to call your number from both on and off campus every few weeks to confirm your greetings are still accurate.
    • Greeting Types
      • External Greeting: Played to callers not originating from the Illinois Wesleyan campus
      • Internal Greeting: Played to callers originating from the Illinois Wesleyan campus
      • Temporary Greeting:
        • Played to both External and Internal callers
        • You can set an expiration date
    • To configure any of the greetings
      1. Login to the voicemail system (see above)
      2. Press 82 and follow the prompts (there is a slight delay before the prompts begin)
        • Press 5 to start recording
        • Press # to stop recording your greeting
        • Press 2 to play your greeting (always listen to each greeting after recording it)
        • Press 76 to delete a greeting (if it did not go well the first time, just delete it and start over)
        • When setting up a temporary greeting, press 9 to set the expiration date and time

Assorted Quick Tips
  • Forward Callers Straight to Your Voicemail
    When someone calls you, your phone will not ring and the caller will be sent straight to your voicemail without waiting the standard five rings for voicemail to pickup
    Activate
    1. Press the Forward key
    2. Enter 3499
    3. Press the Forward key again

    Deactivate

    Press the Forward key


  • Forward Callers to Another Number
    Activate
    1. Press the Forward key
    2. Enter the four digits of the person's extension
    3. Press the Forward key again

    Deactivate

  • Leave a Message for Someone Without Talking to Them
    1. Dial 556-3500
    2. Enter their extension followed by the # key
    3. Leave your message after their greeting plays
  • Bypass Others' Greetings
    When calling someone, you can bypass their greeting and leave your voicemail without waiting.
    1. Wait for their greeting to start playing
    2. Press the 5 key
      Tip: Remember, greetings can contain important information, such as if someone is on vacation.
    3. Leave your message
  • Redial the Last Number (available on most Illinois Wesleyan phones).
    1. Pick up the handset
    • Beige phone
      • Press the bottom-right key
    • Black phone
      • Press the light green button (top right of phone)
  • Save a Voicemail to Audio Tape
    Important:
    Message storage space is limited. Any message you would like to keep for long term storage should be transferred to audio tape.
    • Bring an audio cassette to the Telecommunications Office; voicemail is not intended for long-term storage
  • Call Other Users from Within the System
    A great tool when you are away from campus and do not know a person's phone number.
    1. Login to the voicemail system
    2. Dial 011
    3. Use the telephone keypad to start spelling their last name followed by their first name
    4. Hit the # key any time when entering a person's name to obtain a list of matching names
    5. Follow the prompts

Message Retrieval
  • Listen to Messages
    1. Login to the voicemail system
    2. The system will tell you how many new messages you have
    3. Use the commands below to work with your messages

    Navigation Commands

    Delete a Message:
    When listening to a message, or immediately following a message, press 76.
    Tip: If you accidentally delete a message, do not hang up. Continue pressing 6 to cycle through your messages and return to the deleted message, then just press 76 again to restore it.

    Calls the person whose message you are listening to (on-campus callers)

    Slow the talking speed of the current message
