Setting up Outgoing E-mail with Windows

This guide will help you set up the following e-mail applications to securely send messages via Illinois Wesleyan mail servers from any location.

There are a few easy steps to configuring Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0 to send outgoing e-mail through Illinois Wesleyan's servers:
From the Tools menu, select "Account Settings". The left pane of this window is a list of all e-mail accounts that have been set up in Thunderbird. Click on "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" which should be the last item in this list. If smtp.iwu.edu is not found in the list, you must click "Add". If smtp.iwu.edu is in the list, click "Edit".

You should now see an advanced dialog with more detailed information about your outgoing e-mail settings.

  1. Enter the IWU Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server name: smtp.iwu.edu
  2. Check the Use name and password box and enter your Campus NetID (typically your first initial and the first seven characters of your last name)
  3. Select the secure connection TLS. This setting will allow your e-mail application to securely transmit your password and outgoing mail to the Illinois Wesleyan mail servers.
  4. Change the Port field to 587.

Eudora 7.0

There are a few easy steps to setting up Eudora to send outgoing e-mail through Illinois Wesleyan's servers:
From the Tools menu, select "Options". The left pane of this window is a list of various control panels used to configure Eudora. Click on "Sending Mail" which should be near the top of this list. From this point, follow these three steps:

  1. Enter the IWU Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server name: smtp.iwu.edu
  2. Check the allow authorization box
  3. In the section marked "Secure Sockets when sending" choose: Required ,Alternate Port. This setting will allow your e-mail application to securely transmit your password and outgoing mail to the Illinois Wesleyan mail servers.
