The football team shared the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship and finished with a 9-1 record. The men's basketball team was 24-7 and finished third in the Division III national championships. The women's basketball team finished 16-9 and closed its season with a school-record 10-game winning streak. The men's golf team won its first CCIW championship and had its first conference medalist since 1977. The women's soccer team was 16-4. The softball team was 39-14, won the CCIW tournament, and came within one game of winning the Division III regional. Kathy Carroll earned the highest finish ever for an IWU women's swimmer at the Division III women's swimming championships. She was eighth in the 400-meter individual medley, 14th in the 500 freestyle, and 16th in the 1,650 free and amassed 15 points, which was good for 36th place as a team, the best-ever finish for the Titans and higher than 13 other teams, some with as many as five competitors.
TWO TOURNEYS, ONE YEAR, PART I: Illinois Wesleyan head coach Dennis Martel was an assistant coach for the IWU men's basketball team that placed third in the NCAA Division III championship. Martel was also a basketball assistant for the Titan teams that placed third in 1996 and won the Division III championship in 1997.
TWO TOURNEYS, ONE YEAR, PART II: Illinois Wesleyan freshman outfielder Shawn McGuire was also a reserve on the Titan basketball team that finished third in the NCAA Division III national championship.
ALL-CONFERENCE: Sophomore pitcher Steve Schilsky was chosen "Player of the Year" and Dennis Martel was named "Coach of the Year" for baseball in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Schilsky was named to the first team of the all-CCIW squad along with teammates Ryan Gilfillan and Jeremy Hunt. Titans on the second team are seniors Tony Merritt, Haneef Omar and Adam Palmer, and freshman Kevin Morris. . . It is the fourth time an IWU player has been named CCIW "Player of the Year" since the honor started in 1980. James Rinne earned the honor in 1998, Mike Brown won it in 1991 and James Shaw was the league's first honoree in 1980. . . Schilsky led the CCIW in wins (with a 5-1 record), earned run average (1.37) and strikeouts (72 in 46 innings). His 72 strikeouts falls just two short of the CCIW season record of 74, set by North Central's John Ferri in 1969. . . Gilfillan batted .362 in 21 conference games with a CCIW-best eight doubles, two homers and 15 runs batted in. He also scored 19 runs. . . Hunt hit .369 with eight doubles and tied for the team lead with 16 runs batted in vs. CCIW opponents. He was 10 of 11 in steal attempts and scored 17 runs. . . Merritt tied for the league lead with five home runs. He batted .303 with 16 RBI in 21 league games. . . Omar led the Titans in CCIW play with 23 runs scored. He batted .342 with three home runs and 12 RBI. . . Morris batted a team-high .379 against CCIW foes. He collected six doubles, a triple and a home run and tied for the team lead with 16 RBI. . . Palmer was a first team all-CCIW selection a year ago. This spring he was 4-2 with a 3.43 earned run average in conference play. In 39 1/3 innings he struck out 31 and walked 12.
ALL-REGIONAL TOURNEY: Sophomores Ryan Gilfillan and Steve Schilsky and senior Chad Rock were named to the Central Region all-tournament team. . . In the five-game regional, Gilfillan batted .524 with five doubles and five runs batted in. His on-base percentage was .615 and he had a .765 slugging percentage. . . Schilsky was 1-1 as a pitcher with a 4.50 earned run average and struck out 13 in eight innings. He hit .267 with two home runs, including the game-winner against Wartburg in the final. . . Rock batted .500 with two doubles, a home run and four runs batted in. His on-base percentage was .609.
SCHILS-"K"-Y: Sophomore righthander Steve Schilsky has set a new season record with 102 Ks. He has six games this season with 10 or more strikeouts. He struck out 15 batters against Elmhurst and 16 against North Park. Earlier this season, he struck out 14 North Central hitters. Schilsky's totals rank third through fifth in IWU single game records, behind only Bill Marsh, who fanned 20 against Illinois State in a 12-inning game in 1948, and Ralph Bruck, who struck out 17 Elmhurst batters in a 1954 contest.
RYAN GILFILLAN: Sophomore second baseman Ryan Gilfillan has done his part to rewrite the IWU baseball record book. Gilfillan has set new single-season records in hits (70), doubles (19), games played (51), and at bats (173). He is sixth in runs (46), second in walks (30), and tied for 11th in runs batted in (42).
ADAM PALMER: Senior righthander Adam Palmer is the all-time winningest pitcher in IWU history with 24 wins. He is also the Titans' career leader with seven shutouts, 281.6 innings pitched, and is second in strikeouts with 211. In a single-season, Palmer needs three innings to become the leader. He had nine wins last year and eight more this season, placing him second and third in IWU single-season history.
ARRIVEDERCI: Steve Schilsky and IWU sports information director Stew Salowitz are among the 105-person traveling party that will depart Bloomington Friday, May 31, for a week in Italy with the Illinois Wesleyan University football team. The Titans will play a game against the Bergamo Lions on June 3 and will be visiting Milan, Florence and Rome during the stay. Schilsky is a two-time letterwinner in football as a defensive end.
ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS: Illinois Wesleyan
has had seven first team Verizon® Academic All-Americans in baseball
and 23 total baseball Academic All-Americans since the program began in
1970. Overall, IWU has 96 Verizon® Academic All-Americans since the
program began in 1970, including 42 first team selections, 28 second team,
and 26 third team or honorable mention. Only the University of Nebraska,
Notre Dame, and Bucknell have more total Verizon® Academic All-Americans.
